Core Decision
FCL vs LCL
This is a key cost and handling decision, but there is no universal CBM breakpoint for every lane.
| Aspect | FCL | LCL |
|---|---|---|
| Suitable volume | Stable volume that uses container capacity well | Smaller, trial, or mixed-supplier loads |
| Billing | Equipment, lane, and applicable surcharges | Chargeable volume/weight, minimums, and surcharges |
| Loading | Usually fewer consolidation and handling points | Consolidation, deconsolidation, and additional handling |
| Damage exposure | Depends on loading, bracing, and unloading | Depends heavily on packing, stackability, and handling count |
| Destination charges | Terminal, equipment, drayage, and appointment costs | Deconsolidation, warehouse minimums, and delivery costs |
| Best for | Factory bulk, brand replenishment, machinery | Samples, trial orders, mixed SKUs |
Other Cost Factors
These details also shape the final quote
- Cargo Type
- General, sensitive, and dangerous goods have significantly different rates. Battery/liquid/powder/magnetic cargo requires extra testing and handling fees. Branded goods may need authorization letters.
- Weight & Volume
- Air and express usually charge the greater of volumetric or actual weight. Furniture, lighting, window components, and foam packaging can have chargeable weight far above actual weight.
- Destination
- Port or airport, import setup, destination ZIP code, and receiving-address type all affect cost. Confirm the gateway, importer, appointments, liftgate, and limited-access needs in the quote.
- Seasonality & Capacity
- Pre-Chinese New Year, Q4 peaks, port congestion, and severe weather can affect capacity and price. Plan from the cargo-ready date and target delivery window, with room for an alternate routing.
- Transport Mode
- Ocean is most economical but slowest, air is fastest but costliest, DDP express balances speed and cost. Choice depends on urgency and budget.
- Insurance
- Premium and coverage depend on cargo, packing, lane, and policy terms. Check deductibles, exclusions, declared value, and claim-document requirements before purchasing.
